Initial Research Stage & Idea Generation

Note: At this stage, I was trying to find a pathway of what I wanted to do, and what I should do to achieve my goal – present my concept in 3D. My concept has changed a lot through the whole process, so you probably will see a lot of blogs named with similar names of Research Stages & Idea Generation 2/3/4 etc

Classnotes 2024.10.1

The first lesson is about assessment briefs, introducing the new lecturer etc.

And, the lecturer has recommended a game to us – LIMBO – may watch game recordings on Youtube later.

Notes I recorded that day – Lecturer Amile told us some interesting things about the industry + professional words of game art (love it!)

Quote:

Sensitivity in the game – present something that represents all the people’s issues – keeping it as least people feel offended.

Preparation: Before Class

Got some immediate concepts in my sketchbook:

Since I am a loyal fan of stories of ghosts, monsters and religion, my initial concepts have been inspired by them~

Class notes 2024.10.3:

  • get “why you choose the component”
  • Why did you choose this method for idea generation?
  • What does ‘create your own’ mean?
  • Why did the lecture choose these 5 styles?

‘draw something for all the styles. Because you don’t know when your idea, your true great idea comes for which style’, by Lecturer Michael

  • this sentence is very inspirational. Maybe I will be more interested in another theme rather than the city with monsters – I think it’s just too early to say ‘yes, that’s the one I want to do’ before trying to explore other themes.

The concept for other themes:

I love The Broken Prince

2024.10.10 – Research on How to Make Model/Shading/Environments in 3D

conveys the process of making the style of Pen & Ink – I thought they use a shader, but it’s actually hand-painting
how to create glitch effect in UE
another type of glitch effect in UE
Cyberpunk style modelling – environment. like a box? wall = buildings
very inspirational – tutorial + made model in blocks then put them together to form a street
love the lantern design in it

maybe…in my design, there would be some places with faint lights only = quite dark? love the idea of leaving some dark places.

a real city in China. reference
